“I think by giving [patients] information and the shared decision-making decision aid, and going through a process with them where you educate them, you clarify their values, you point out they have to make a decision… that actually there are several choices, and each choice has a variety of different positive and negative potential outcomes, and the patient really has a choice which way he wants to go depending on what's important to him… It's not me, their provider, that's driving this choice. I read the map and I tell them that if they want to get from Boston to Hanover, you can go several different routes and it depends on what you want. You can go on the highway if you want to get there quickly or you can take the scenic route or you can take the Appalachian Trail. It depends on what you want, what your goals are. It's not up to me.”
