Purpose

The overall goal of this study is to evaluate the effects of patient decision aids (pDAs) on improving decision quality and reducing length of surgical consults for TJA, and their cost-effectiveness. Specific questions include:

1. What are the effects of pDAs compared to usual patient education materials on: a) decision quality; and b) proportion of patients sent back to their referring physicians because their informed values indicate they prefer non-surgical treatment for their hip or knee osteoarthritis?

2. Are pDAs for TJA cost-effective?
