Purpose
The overall purpose of this research is to contribute to improving communication with the community about screening mammography. The research involves developing and evaluating educational materials and strategies to meet the important ethical objective of providing balanced information about screening outcomes in order to support screening decisions.
The specific research aims are:
Specific aim 1: To understand the attitudes and values of screening-age women and clinicians (general practitioners, breast physicians) regarding overdiagnosis in mammography screening.
Specific aim 2: To survey the views of a representative sample of screening-age women about the level of overdiagnosis they would consider acceptable in the trade-off with screening benefits.
Specific aim 3: To investigate the influence of information about overdiagnosis on women’s attitudes and intentions towards mammography screening and on screening behavior.
