Purpose

The goal of this research is to provide pilot data aimed at a rigorous randomized clinical trial in assessing the effectiveness of barbershop-based health promotion in order to improve the quality of decisions made by AA men about PrCA screening. We aim to locally pilot the use of PrCA decision aids in an established nationwide and community-based initiative—Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program (BBHOP)— which focuses on barbershop-based education, screening and referral for diabetes and hypertension. This pilot of a barbershop-based decision support intervention (DESI) will assess the use of I/SDM principles–education, encouragement and facilitated referrals for decisions about PrCA screening through a non-randomized design, differences-indifferences model in 2 Los Angeles-area barbershops (Aims):

Specific aim 1: To test the effectiveness PrCA decision aid DVD in barbershops as a means to improve quality of decisions made by AA men regarding PrCA screening.

  • How effective are DESIs at improving PrCA DQ among AA men when utilized in a trusted, community setting (i.e., barbershops) compared to men’s health educational materials?

Specific aim 2: To test for an intervention effect on the patron’s healthcare seeking attitudes and behaviors leading to informed consultations with a primary care physician.

  • Does exposure to a DESI in barbershops, complemented by a clinical referral network, lead to AA men consulting with a healthcare provider in order to arrive at a shared-decision about PrCA screening?

Specific aim 3: To pilot the introduction of a formal study protocol (pre-post test design) into a barbershop-based health promotion in order assess or obtain:

  • Pilot data in order to compete for federal funding for a multi-institutional randomized trial (RCT) leveraging the national reach of BBHOP.
  • How reliable is the intervention process? What is effect size population?
