New NEJM Perspectives Piece: Shared Decision Making to Improve Care and Reduce Costs
In the latest edition of the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), authors make a call to action for policymakers to take meaningful steps to implement what the authors call “the sleeper” shared decision making (SDM) provision of the Accountable Care Act (ACA). The authors, Emily Oshima Lee from the Center for American Progress and Dr. Ezekiel J. Emanuel from the University of Pennsylvania, make a compelling argument that the benefits of SDM with the use of decision aids -- improvements in patient knowledge, lower anxiety over the care process, improved health outcomes, reduction in unwarranted variation in care and costs, and greater alignment of care with patients’ values -- should warrant swift action on the provision of ACA (Section 3506) that relates directly to SDM implementation. Lee and Emanuel argue that the current pace of Section 3506 implementation is detrimental to both patients and the health care system as a whole. Continue reading
Shared Decision Making Policy and Decision Quality Wrap-up and a Preview of Patient Engagement Week
Week three of Shared Decision Making (SDM) Month was quite educational as we explored shared decision making policy efforts in the U.S., as well as measures of decision quality. Shannon Brownlee, who is featured in the film, stopped by to answer our burning questions about the current state of health care in the U.S. During Wednesday’s webinar, we heard from individuals involved with projects resulting from federal and state shared decision making legislation. Thursday’s webinar provided us with insight on developing and implementing decision quality measures. Continue reading

By forming an ACO, a hospital and medical staff shared clinical and financial responsibility for coordinating care to improve quality and lower costs. The patient's role was essentially passive, like a car door that ends up with fewer dents and nicks thanks to better management of the auto assembly line. Continue reading

[Politico] ACA Boosts 'Shared Decision-Making'
"And some of the momentum is coming from state legislators or health officials who want a shared decision-making component in some of the latest models for cutting waste and improving quality in health care spending, like 'medical homes.' Washington state began encouraging shared decision making in it's state's health care systems about five years ago; Massachusetts joined in last summer when it passed its sweeping health cost control law, according to Benjamin Moulton, the senior legal adviser to the Boston-based Informed Medical Decisions Foundation."Read the full-text article.
