New Study Shows Patients Know Little About Conservative Treatment Options for Coronary Artery Disease

Nine out of 10 Medicare patients who received a stent procedure for coronary disease report that their physicians did not present them with the non-invasive alternative of managing their condition with medication, according to the results of a study published online today by the Journal of General Internal Medicine. [The Boston Globe] Meds as Effective as Stents in Treating Stable Heart Disease

"Researchers from the Informed Medical Decisions Foundation in Boston and the Dartmouth Institute, in collaboration with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, surveyed people who had an elective procedure in 2008. Those who had a stent implanted soon after a heart attack or following a visit to the emergency department were excluded."
