UCSF Breast Cancer Decision Support Inspires Edinburgh

Inspired by Dr. Jeff Belkora's work with shared decision making at the UCSF Breast Care Center, Dr. Belinda Hacking brought a similar model to Edinburgh. Macmillan Cancer Support provided Belinda and her team with a generous grant for a pilot study integrating decision support into medical care for breast, prostate, brain and colorectal cancer. Preliminary results have shown that patients believed the intervention had a positive effect on their experience. Continue reading

Perspectives on Health Technology Assessment: Response from the Patient's Perspective

Health technology assessment (HTA) involves values and judgements, but there have been few attempts to seek the views of members of the public or to ensure that they have access to the results. Patients and citizens can make an important contribution to HTA by determining priorities for assessment, designing and conducting assessments and appraisals, receiving and using the findings, and engaging in debates about policy priorities and rationing. Those responsible for HTA should make greater efforts to involve the public and ensure that the findings are accessible to patients for use when making treatment choices. Continue reading

[New York Times Well Blog] Do Patients Want More Care or Less?

"See a trend here? So does Dr. Michael Barry, president of the Informed Medical Decisions Foundation, a nonprofit group that promotes sound medical thinking. 'People are more receptive to conversations about medical interventions having both pros and cons,' says Dr. Barry. 'Traditionally, newer and more aggressive interventions were often assumed to be better.' But there are hints of a shift, he says: 'When patients are fully informed, they tend to be more conservative.'"
