The Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF) is a nonprofit health care organization and a pioneer in multispecialty group practice of medicine. PAMF is a member of Sutter Health, a family of hospitals and physician organizations serving more than 100 communities in Northern California. To date, few randomized trials have directly compared the same Decision Support Interventions (DESIs) delivered through different media. While earlier efforts focused principally on booklets and videos, more recently the majority of DESI development efforts have focused on creating interactive electronic tools that can be delivered through the internet. However, very little is known about how web-based DESIs perform in comparison to more traditional video DESIs, such as those developed and distributed by the Informed Medical Decisions Foundation. After merging with two other divisions under the PAMF name, the organization employs more than 1,000 physicians and serves more than 700,000 patients. PAMF became a Foundation funded demonstration site in 2009 in order to build a sustainable model to promote shared decision making (SDM) and use of decision aids (DAs). Continue reading
