Clinicians and staff at the Division of Family Medicine at the University of California San Diego have developed both a visit-based and registry-driven distribution platform for video decision aids. Using the electronic health record, physicians and staff at any of the three academic practices of the Division can electronically prescribe a video decision aid. The order provides the patient with instant access to a library of nine video decision aids that are maintained on a web-based video server. Electronic distribution of the decision aids provides patients at the three geographically separate practice sites with timely access to the videos. Alternatively, patients can obtain a physical copy of the DVD through a mail-based fulfillment program. Clinicians are studying the use of video decision aids in the two community practices to better understand implementation of decision support in non-academic settings.
